The purpose of this pop culture paper is to provide a discussion and analysis of the phenomenon that is Mike Tyson. The format that will be utilized for this paper is to provide a brief background on the man as well as highlight his storied career. Finally this paper will conclude with a brief discussion of why the fighter has become such a pop icon.
According to Clancy (2008) Mike Tyson grew up in Brooklyn New York and was raised by his mother until he was sixteen years old when she passed away and left the teenager in the hands of his youth boxing trainer ‘Cus D’Amato’ who later became his legal guardian. According to the 2009documentary film Tyson, the young man frequently engaged in petty crimes and took to street fighting on frequent occasions. However it was under the guidance of D’Amato that Tyson started performing well at amateur boxing matches and was admitted to the 1982 Junior Olympic Games. Although it was the case that Tyson only won a silver medal, according to the 2009 documentary Tyson became a phenomenon after he scored the fastest knockout in an Olympic bout at approximately 8 seconds.
It was upon this foundation that Tyson made his professional debut in 1985 where according to Cyber Boxing Zone (2010) Tyson won twenty six of his first twenty eight bouts by either knockout or technical knockout, most of which ended in the first round. The man became a powerhouse the likes of which the boxing community had not seen for a long time and quickly became known to most athletics fans across the world. However this career which brought great heights ended up hitting rock bottom. Tyson stood accused of sexually and physically abusing his wife Robin Givens during his marriage in the late eighties. After the divorce Tyson was accused and convicted of raping a young woman in Indiana and according to Berkow (1995) served three years of a ten year sentence.
After this point Tyson tried to regain his career by staging a comeback that culminated in a two major bouts with Evander Holyfield during which Tyson bit off a chunk of Holyfields ear.
As pop cultural consumers I think it is natural that we are fascinated with te rise and fall of celebrity. It is the case that during the height of his career, Mike Tyson was an unstoppable force and a near perfect boxing machine. However in his personal life he brought about a type of ruin that the man self described in the 2009 documentary about his life as being “A tragedy”. As with many pop cultural phenomenon’s we tend to view. As far as my analysis is concerned, very few people remember Tyson for his boxing career anymore and simply focus on his failed personal life which is a trend we have seen spread across many different pop cultural fields. Mike Tyson remains such a pop Icon well over a decade after his last serious bouts simply because by the force of his personality he remains such an interesting figure. A soft spoken man, with tattoos over his face, that says remarkably inappropriate comments, who had a trainwreck life but was the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

Weekly written Analysis 3

The iphone, launched by Apple Inc., is a line of smart phones which contains almost all functions of a camera phone, media player and acts as an internet device. Besides, the touch screen enabled phone is user friendly. Thesis statement: General opinion about the iphone: Is it good or bad?
Positive
The general opinion about iphone is that it includes basic features and functions of a mobile phone. In addition, its multimedia functioning and 3G features are really innovative in this age of rapid progress in science and technology. Besides, its battery backup is really good and most useful for those who have less time to charge their mobile phones. The iphone’s usefulness as device with easy access to the internet, music clarity etc attracts the younger generation towards the same. But the iphone 3GS is more innovative and faster than the iphone 3G. Jesse Varsalone (2008), in the work-‘Macintosh OS X, IPod, and IPhone Forensic Analysis DVD Toolkit’ makes clear that the second generation iphone is ground-breaking and most compatible to 3G network (p.46).
Negative
The most important criticism against the iphone is that the problem of call clarity is still unresolved. But Frank Zammetti (2010), in the work-‘Practical Palm Pre WebOS Projects’ opines that the most important criticism against the iphone is that,  its ultimate control over hardware and software is under the direct control of the Apple (p.13). At the same time, 3G reception in the iphone needs further improvement.

Summing, general opinion about the iphone consists of positive and negative opinions. But it is noteworthy that iphone is an innovative device which is capable to attract attention of all who are in fond of technological innovation. Besides, the younger generation considers the iphone as the best example of technological innovation and as a status symbol.

Contemporary Icons

Contemporary Icons
The three contemporary icons I will analyze here are some of the most famous personalities of their respective fields whose success and fame have made them international icons in today’s world. They are J. K. Rowling, Rowan Atkinson and Bill Gates.
            J. K. Rowling is a scholastic icon of today’s fictional world. She is the author of the well-known Harry Potter series. She has proved her competence by portraying the fictional world in such a superb way that one starts believing in the fantasies created by her. The war between good and evil keeps the reader stuck to the book till the very end. I chose J. K. Rowling as an icon because she has inspired me through her hard struggle to reach this fame. She was anonymous when she started off as a writer but her constant struggle has led her to the pathway of success so much so that she is considered to be one of the richest female icons in the world of literature.
The second icon I chose is Rowan Atkinson, the person performing the very famous character and love of all hearts, Mr. Bean. Though this British comedian has played a variety of roles and has wrote a large number of sitcoms, but none brought such fame to him as the sitcom, Mr. Bean, did. The cartoon animated series is what keeps young kids crazy for him. Atkinson has brought lively colors to the otherwise dull and stressful lives of the viewers, and that is why he means a lot to me.
The third icon I chose is Bill Gates, the legend of the technology world who is the Chairman and CEO of Microsoft Corporation. He is considered to be one of the wealthiest persons in the world. Starting as an entrepreneur, Gates traveled a long way to reach this status. He was born in a normal middle-class family but was always curious about technological advances as a student. I chose him as an icon because brainy people always inspire me. His constant learning and struggling has made him a legendary icon of the tech world.

Popular Culture

Popular culture is the set of values, beliefs, preferences and trends that are embraced by society at any given time in history.  It is an all-encompassing phenomenon that includes trends in the types of foods, clothing,  art, media, technology, career choices and philosophies that have the largest impact on society.  Philosophies or concepts play a large role in popular culture and trends that are rejected or embraced.  For instance, popular culture in the 60’s was represented by the peace symbol.  It was a powerful representation of the beliefs of many Americans, particularly young Americans, who protested the Vietnam War.  The beliefs were reflected in music and art of the time.  Artists like the Beatles and The Rolling Stones became popular as their lyrics focused on many of society’s issues of the time, such as war, drug use, sex and rejection of current politics.
Popular culture is highly influenced by media.  Ads on TV, radio and the internet
introduce products and services that corporate America hopes or believes we want.  Often
advertising succeeds in making us believe we need something, by tying in current beliefs
or habits.  Fast food is an example of a product that appeals to the hectic lifestyles and freedom of choice of the past few decades.  Many other products, such as Coca Cola, focus on reaching consumers through relevant advertising.  As a part of popular culture, Coca Cola, or Coke, has been quick to change its visual images and jingles from one decade to another, to reflect more current beliefs of views of American life.  This is why it remained an icon in popular  culture for such a long period of time.  Other representations of popular culture reflect beliefs rather than help shape habits and trends.  The art of Andy Warhol, said to be one of the greatest examples of popular culture representation in the art world, reflects and symbolizes American ideals of consumerism.
Relevance of Popular Culture
Popular culture affects how Americans think, feel or believe.  An understanding of it is of great importance in a business environment, as consumers of products and services have  emotional and physical needs that must be met.  While products and services often reflect lifestyle and habit, they also help shape lifestyle and habits.  Computers and cellular phones are examples of products that attempted to satisfy an unmet need, while having a major impact on how we conduct business and social lives.  Many corporations, such as Microsoft and Apple, have become successful business icons in popular culture through careful consideration of how current products or trends can be enhanced and made more accessible to the public.
Marketing now encompasses many more forms of media than in the past.  Web browsing via computer and cellular devices provide additional routes to consider.  Popular culture often determines how corporations market their products and services, which media are most useful and how campaigns are developed.  Billboards are still common forms of advertisement in largemetropolitan areas, but corporations that want to reach the masses more effectively must consider how the internet is used, as a major influence in how marketing campaigns are designed.  Design of web pages that are interesting, yet not too cluttered and present clear, concise messages in less than thirty seconds is key in reaching large populations.  Businesses use technologies that are embraced by popular culture daily, to communicate with partners, connect various departments and provide products or services more quickly.
Pop Culture Artifact
The simple, yet powerful smiley face symbol became popular in the 70’s, as society became less concerned about politics and more concerned about themselves and their own happiness.  The symbol is thought to replace the peace symbol of the 60’s.  Though it’s shape does not change, its meaning, mood and use have been easily adapted to new technology.  In the past few decades it has been represented on stickers, to promote or encourage one’s self-esteem and pride.  The smiley face has been easily adapted into the emoticons or symbols used in email, online chatting and text messaging, for a variety of messages.  Its upward curve of the mouth can be flipped to represent negative feelings, or straightened to represent the seriousness of certain topics.  It is the ease in which the symbol can be altered or adapted that explains why it remains an icon of popular culture.  With all the technological changes and advances that have occurred, its simplicity has helped the symbol remain current.
